The same traits that make nurses good at the bedside make them good partners at home. Here are five of them.
1. They give the best care possible
Nurses know how to look after people, and that does not stop when they clock out. From a headache to a serious illness to a bad injury, you are in steady hands. They also bring their hospital habits home, like handwashing, which keeps everyone, especially kids, from getting sick as often.
2. They are patient
Nurses spend all day with people who are impatient, anxious, and stressed, and they keep the situation under control anyway. When you or your kids melt down, that same patience defuses it fast.
3. They listen and understand
Nurses are trained in therapeutic communication. They read you, and they can tell something is wrong before you say a word. When you are overwhelmed or going through a rough stretch, they show up for you.
4. They have a can-do attitude
After what they handle in the hospital, nothing at home fazes them. They will scrub a dirty floor or clean out an infested drawer without flinching, and they are resourceful enough to solve a problem with whatever tools are on hand.
5. They can save your life
Living with someone trained in first aid and CPR makes a real difference when an accident happens. Nurses also recognize the early signs of disease, keep you on top of your checkups, and make sure you take your medications.
