The Best Hospitals To Work As A Nurse

13 min read

Every hospital on this list holds Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), awarded to fewer than 10% of U.S. hospitals in recognition of superior nursing care. From an initial pool of more than 5,000 hospitals in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) dataset, we scored the top 30, then narrowed to 15 using patient satisfaction, safe staffing, hospital safety measures, and ratings from a two-nurse review panel. The panel weighed nursing career opportunities, benefits, and workplace environment. Full methodology is at the end.

Methodology and Limitations

These rankings draw on data from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS), the CMS Hospital General Information dataset, and the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program, plus ratings from a two-nurse panel. More than 5,000 hospitals from the CMS dataset were scored, and the top hospitals were set by a weighted average of seven measures. Data was accessed on August 11, 2022.

HCAHPS is a random survey of recently discharged patients. Nurse communication and overall patient experience scores are each weighted at 10% of the final score. CMS Hospital General Information provides overall ratings across as many as 50 measures in five groups: mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience, and timely and effective care. Overall hospital ratings are weighted at 20%, and the count of safety measures better than the national average is weighted at 15%. Magnet status is weighted at 20%.

The top 30 hospitals were then scored on three career factors: nursing career opportunity, benefits, and workplace environment. The two-nurse panel reviewed each hospital's career information on a 5-point scale from "below average" to "above average." The three factors were averaged and weighted at 25% of the final score, with panel scoring done August 17-23, 2022.

Career Opportunity factors: competitive salaries, signon bonuses, residency or fellowship programs, training and education, continuing education, advancement programs, nursing recognition or awards, nursing specialties, and equal employment policies.

Benefits factors: vacation and paid time off, retirement, insurance, flexible scheduling, loan repayment, childcare, family planning, and wellness programs.

Work Environment factors: staffing levels and nurse-to-patient ratios, experienced leadership, safety measures, technology and resources, and facility quality.

The rankings rely on publicly available data, which may not fully reflect nursing conditions at each hospital. Each dataset carries limits, including self-reporting bias and underrepresentation of certain populations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a hospital good to work at as a nurse? Look past the brand name at the things that shape your shifts: safe nurse-to-patient ratios, shared governance that gives bedside nurses a real say, residency and career-ladder programs, tuition support, and a strong safety record. Every hospital on this list pairs those with Magnet recognition.

What is Magnet designation and why does it matter? Magnet is the ANCC's top credential for nursing excellence, held by fewer than 10% of U.S. hospitals. Magnet organizations report higher nurse satisfaction, lower burnout and turnover, and better patient outcomes, which is why it is a useful signal when you are comparing employers.

How were these 15 hospitals chosen? From more than 5,000 hospitals in the CMS dataset, the top 30 were scored on patient experience (HCAHPS), CMS safety and quality ratings, and Magnet status, then narrowed to 15 by a two-nurse panel that weighed career opportunity, benefits, and work environment. Full methodology is above.

How current is this ranking? The underlying CMS and HCAHPS data was accessed in August 2022, and the career panel scored hospitals that same month. Hospital programs, bonuses, and staffing change over time, so confirm current details with each employer before you apply.

Do I need a BSN to work at these hospitals? Most Magnet hospitals prefer or require a BSN for new RN hires, and many offer tuition reimbursement or RN-to-BSN support if you start with an associate degree. Check each hospital's posted requirements, since they vary by unit and role.

How should I use this list in a job search? Treat it as a starting shortlist, not a verdict. Cross-check each hospital's current openings, ask about nurse-to-patient ratios and residency support in your interview, and weigh location, cost of living, and the specialties you want against the scores here.
