Postpartum nurses care for women and infants in the days immediately following birth. They deliver medical care, monitor both patient and baby for complications, and support families through the earliest days of bonding.

This role differs from related specialties. Labor and delivery nurses assist during the birth itself. NICU nurses care for newborns who need extra monitoring. Certified nurse-midwives are advanced practice nurses who deliver babies and provide broader care to women and children. The postpartum nurse owns recovery, whether it is a patient's first child or their fifth.

How to Become a Postpartum Nurse
