NCLEX + Career

How the NCLEX works.

Orientation, not authority. The rules change, so confirm the current details at NCSBN before you schedule.

The format

The NCLEX-RN is a computerized adaptive test. It adjusts each question to your ability as you answer, so no two exams are identical.

The number of questions is variable, currently between 85 and 150, and the exam can run up to five hours including the tutorial and breaks.

Next Generation NCLEX

Since April 2023 the exam includes Next Generation items that test clinical judgment, not just recall. Expect case studies with several linked questions and standalone items.

Newer formats include matrix grids, bowtie, and trend items, and they can award partial credit. Practice reading the whole scenario before you answer.

How scoring works

It is pass or fail, not a percentage. The engine stops when it is confident you are above or below the passing standard.

Finishing in 85 questions or running to 150 does not tell you the result. Length is about confidence, not performance.

On exam day

Bring a valid government photo ID and arrive early. Personal items stay in a locker, not at the workstation.

You get two optional breaks. Your board of nursing releases official results, and many states offer unofficial quick results a couple of days later.

The path

Where it sits on the path

The NCLEX is one gate in a longer route. Here is the whole pipeline, classroom to first job.
